Magnetic permeability is the ability of a material to carry magnetism. It is indicated by the degree to which it is attracted to magnet. The Magnetic Susceptibility of the strong ferromagnetism material is between 100 and 10,000.

All stainless steels, with the exception of the austenitic group, are stongly attracted to magnet. Some steel can react to the magnetic field strongly when it is on and returns to normal condition quicky when the magnetic field is turned off. This property of the steel is referred to as magnetically soft, otherwise, it is referred to as magnetically hard. For corrosion resisting applications, there are Ferrite S.S. which are magnetically soft. These steels are usually variants of the grade"18/2 in AISI"(i.e., 18% Chromium, 2% Molybdenum) with strictly controlled additions of Silicon and often Sulphur to make them free machining. Special milling can gurantee the properties of these steels.
